Pangburn’s overwhelming size advantage eventually took over as the Lady Tigers held off scrappy Concord in the second half for a 56-49 victory Monday evening at the Tiger Den.
Guard Taylor Kerby got Pangburn going with a 3-pointer from the top of the key then Lindsey Louks hit two free throws and Micah Edwards added another as the Lady Tigers took an early 6-0 lead.
Concord’s Casey Gorecke responded with a jumper from the right baseline but Louks answered with a baby hook.
Andrea Davis recorded an old-fashioned 3-point play to pull the Lady Pirates within three but Edwards scored over two defenders before Davis closed the period with a free throw, cutting Concord’s deficit to 10-6 going into the second quarter.
After a three-plus minute scoring drought for both teams to open the second quarter, Pangburn gained some separation with a 6-2 spurt as Louks scored from the left block before Gorecke answered from the left block.
Edwards countered with a jumper from the left wing and Louks scored inside, giving the Lady Tigers a 16-8 lead.
Davis completed another 3-point play to pull Concord within five but Edwards canned a jumper from the left elbow and Kerby swished a 3-pointer up top, pushing the Lady Tigers’ lead to 21-11.
Davis and Edwards swapped free throws in the final minute of the first half as Pangburn took a 23-13 lead to the locker room.
Davis pulled Concord within single digits by following her own miss for two but Louks responded with a pair of free throws. Paige Jeffery scored from the left block but Robyn Lyons found Edwards with a touch pass for a bucket as the two teams traded baskets early in the third quarter.
Charlie Martin drained a trey up top for Concord then Gorecke added two free throws as the Lady Pirates pulled within five but Louks countered by hitting three of four free throws.
Leading 30-22, Pangburn scored four more as Lyons snagged a steal and hit Kerby for a layup then Edwards swiped a steal and found Kerby for two more.
Jeffery got a putback to pull Concord back within 10 but Louks hit a free throw then Stephanie Davis found Edwards on the left block for a bucket.
Trailing 37-24, Concord scrapped back into the game with an 8-0 run as Gorecke hit a short jumper, Kindalh Mayfield grabbed a loose ball and scored then Gorecke popped a jumper from the right elbow, causing Pangburn to call for timeout with 2:05 remaining in the third quarter.
Concord continued its run when Davis hit a pull up bank from the right side but Pangburn’s Davis pulled down an offensive rebound and hit a short jumper.
Concord’s Davis countered with a pull up jumper in traffic, pulling the Lady Pirates within five at 39-34 heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Pangburn opened the fourth quarter with four straight as Louks made two from the line and Kerby lobbed to Louks for a bucket before Mayfield hit a free throw for Concord.
Pangburn’s Kristen Webb pushed the Lady Tigers’ lead to 10 with bucket off an inbound play but Martin and Gorecke each notched a stick back, cutting Pangburn’s lead to six with just over three minutes left to play.
Pangburn stepped up its defense down the stretch and converted 12-of-16 free throws to pull away for a 56-49 victory.
Davis led Concord with a game-high 25 points and Gorecke added 12. Louks paced Pangburn (9-2) with 18 points while Edwards added 17 and Kerby finished with 12.
