  • Give West Side pitcher Teraka Cowley one or two runs and the Lady Eagles are usually going to win. On Thursday, the Lady Eagles gave Cowley a five-run lead and coasted to a 5-1 win over Mount Vernon-Enola in 1A-2 South conference play in Greers Ferry.
Cowley limited the Lady Warhawks to three hits while striking out seven as the Lady Eagles improved to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in league play.
Cowley pitched around a two-out single by Hayley Brewer in the top of the first inning but MVE starting pitcher Amber Hodge held the Lady Eagles scoreless in the bottom half despite singles by Haley Delk and Amber England. With Delk and England in scoring position, Hodge escaped the first frame with a strikeout.
Cowley pitched a perfect second, including two strikeouts and West Side took the lead for good with a run in the bottom half, starting when Eden Bailey reached on a mishandled strikeout. Karissa Passmore slapped a single up the middle then Alexis Barnes’ sacrifice-bunt was mishandled, which loaded the bases for Kayla Lawson, who popped out to second.
With one out and the bases still loaded, Hodge kept the Lady Eagles scoreless when Whitney England’s sharp grounder to second forced Bailey at the plate. But, with two down, Delk’s pop-up to the right side of the infield was dropped, allowing Passmore to score before MVE cut down Barnes at home plate.
Other than a two-out infield single by Katherine Bartley, Cowley cruised through the top half of the third and West Side added a run in the bottom half. Cowley ignited the Lady Eagles with a single past third and Amber England followed with a single to left center.
Keeligh Davis dropped a sacrifice-bunt, which moved both runners into scoring position. Hodge retired the next batter for the second out but Passmore delivered an RBI single up the middle that scored Cowley and pushed West Side’s lead to 2-0 before MVE escaped when Hodge made a diving catch on a pop-up in front of the mound.
Cowley sat down the Lady Warhawks in order in the fourth and West Side exploded with three runs on one big hit in the bottom half. Facing relief pitcher Jessi Bartley, Lawson walked and Amber England reached via error before Delk poked a 2 RBI double to right field that plated Lawson and Amber England, then Delk also came around to score once MVE committed a throwing error.
Jessi Bartley settled in from there and didn’t allow a run the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Cowley continued to dominate, retiring MVE in order in the fifth but Cowley found a little trouble in the sixth when Katherine Bartley lined a one-out triple to the wall in deep center.
Page 2 of 2 - Bartley scored on an RBI sacrifice-bunt from Sydney Davies as MVE avoided a shutout but basically tossed in the towel. Cowley retired the next batter and three more in a row in the seventh to close out the Lady Eagles’ 5-1 victory.
West Side traveled to Mountain View for a nonconference game on Tuesday and heads to South Side Bee Branch for an invitational tournament this weekend.
