  • West Side received perhaps the best news of its season when ace pitcher Teraka Cowley was cleared to play prior to Tuesday’s game in Concord. The Lady Eagles backed her up with plenty of offense, scoring eight runs in the top of the third inning while rolling to an 11-3 victory over the Lady Pirates on Tuesday in 1A-2 South conference play.
Concord pitcher Sydney Harlan worked around a two-out walk issued to Whitney England followed by a single from Amber England in the top of the first inning.
Cowley, who has struggled with some arm issues recently as the Lady Eagles suffered two straight league losses, sat down the Lady Pirates in order during the bottom half.
West Side scratched across the game’s first run in the top of the second as Eden Bailey stirred up a two-out rally with a walk. Alexis Barnes followed with a bunt single then Haley Delk drove an RBI single to left field, scoring Bailey for a 1-0 lead.
Cowley pitched around a two-out single by Jaycie Freeman in the bottom of the second and the Lady Eagles pounded out eight runs on seven hits in the top of the third. Whitney England reached on an error to start the onslaught and she scored when Amber England slammed an RBI double to deep left field.
Keeleigh Davis added a bunt single and Carra Duncan reached on a fielder’s choice, which loaded the bases for Karissa Passmore, who drilled a 2 RBI single to centerfield, plating Amber England and Davis.
West Side extended its lead to 5-0 when Bailey dropped an RBI, sacrifice-bunt that scored Duncan. After Barnes was hit-by-a-pitch, Delk plugged the gap in left deep left center with a 2 RBI triple, scoring Passmore and Barnes as the Lady Eagles’ pushed their lead to 7-0.
Cowley ripped an RBI triple to the alley in left center that brought home Delk then Whitney England pushed an RBI single through the hole on right side, scoring Cowley for a 9-0 lead.
Amber England added a single through the hole on left side but Harlan evaded further damage, inducing a groundout to Hannah Cornett at third and a fly-out to Mandy Thompson in left field.
Cowley struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the third before Harlan laced a single up the middle. Harlan stole second but Cowley responded with a strikeout, ending the third.
West Side maintained its comfortable 9-0 lead until the sixth, when they added an insurance run on a wild hotbox play. Davis, who was hit-by-a-pitch, managed to escape the pickle when initially caught up between home and third.
Trailing 10-0 and needing at least one run to keep the game alive, Concord scored three runs, starting when Harlan beat out a bunt single that turned into a throwing error. Julia Wilson bunted Harlan to third while reaching first on the fielder’s choice then Cornett sent a chopper to the left side that caused a throwing error, allowing Harlan to score.
Page 2 of 2 - Emanda Reeves ripped an RBI single to right field that scored Wilson but Cowley fired back with a strikeout before Freeman laced an RBI double to center, plating Cornett and pulling the Lady Pirates within seven at 10-3.
With two runners in scoring position, Cowley got out of the jam with pop-out and strikeout. West Side tacked on the game’s final run in the top of the seventh as Delk stroked a triple to deep left center and eventually scored on an RBI off the bat of Whitney England.
West Side opens 1A-2 South district tournament play on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at South Side Bee Branch.
