  • Rose Bud took the wind right out of Perryville’s sails from the start on Friday, scoring five runs in the first inning and cruising to an 11-1, six-inning victory in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state tournament.
In contrast to the Lady Ramblers’ first-round win over Genoa Central, Rose Bud started fast against the Lady Mustangs.
“I don’t feel like they were as nervous today,” said Rose Bud Coach Matt Porter. “When you put up five runs in the first you feel real good about yourself at that point. All the pressure was on them at that point. We just had to play our defense and we did that and went out and took care of business.”
Rose Bud right-handed pitcher Dana Naquin retired the Lady Mustangs in order in the top of the first and received plenty of support in the bottom half, starting when Tori Willborg crushed a one-out double deep down the left field line.
After Lemieux was hit-by-a-pitch, Perryville starting pitcher Cali Lankford retired Dana Naquin on a groundout to shortstop, which moved both runners into scoring position. With two out, Sara Sartin delivered a 2 RBI single up the middle that scored Willborg and Lemieux. After Madelyn Murphree reached on an error, Destany Naquin smashed an RBI double down left field line, plating Sartin.
Misty Newcom then tomahawked a 2 RBI single up the middle that scored courtesy runner Kailee Hannah and Destany Naquin, extending the Lady Ramblers’ lead to 5-0 before Lankford got out of the jam.
Perryville scored its only run in the top of the second when Sydney Bean lifted an RBI sacrifice-fly to left field, which scored Haley Blunt, who led off the inning with a walk. The Lady Mustangs may have scored more had Murphree not gunned down Lacy Alford trying to take second after Bean’s fly-ball as the Lady Ramblers used a double play to get out of an inning that saw Perryville place three of its first four batters on base.
Rose Bud maintained its 5-1 advantage until the bottom of the third, when the Lady Ramblers added three runs on two hits. Sartin hammered a leadoff single high off the center field wall to ignite Rose Bud and Murphree reached on a two-base throwing error.
Destany Naquin drove home Sartin with an RBI groundout to shortstop and Newcom brought home courtesy runner Kailee Hannah with an RBI single up the middle.
With two out, Perryville committed its second error of the inning, allowing Newcom to score as the Lady Ramblers’ lead blossomed to 8-1 before Lankford escaped further damage.
Dana Naquin retired the Lady Mustangs in order in the fourth but Perryville relief pitcher Mariah Garcia held Rose Bud scoreless in the bottom half, only giving up a two-out single to Sartin.

In the top of the sixth, Dana Naquin only allowed a one-out walk to Garcia as third base player Marissa Holland took care of two ground balls and Murphree made an outstanding catch on a foul ball near the backstop.
The Lady Ramblers ended the game with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth, beginning when Dana Naquin singled to center field and Sartin singled up the middle. After both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, Murphree drove home Dana Naquin with an RBI, sacrifice-fly to center field.
Destany Naquin followed with a grounder to shortstop that turned into an error as Sartin scored and Newcom completed the Lady Ramblers’ romp of Perryville with an RBI double to the gap in right center, scoring Destany Naquin for an 11-1 victory.
