  • Missing three projected starters, the Heber Springs Panthers tried to get some extra work in during a two-day team camp held Monday and Tuesday at the Panther Den.
The Panthers beat Vilonia 47-32 Monday behind 25 points from center Mason Schroeder and four three-pointers from point guard Austin Adkins. However, already missing shooting guard Judson Smith, a returning starter, Heber lost Schroeder and Adkins to injury in a lopsided loss to an extremely talented Maumelle team later on Monday.
Heber Coach Kevin Kyzer said the camp provided a good chance to get some of the reserves that will receive playing time additional minutes. “It gave the guys in the rotation a lot of time, which was good for us. We got better from Monday to Tuesday even missing three starters. We played a lot better against Maumelle [the second time]. ”
After falling to Southside Batesville 32-25 on Tuesday morning, Heber played one of its best games since losing Schroeder and Adkins in a rematch against Maumelle, which returns several key players from the team the Panthers beat in the Class 4A state tournament this past season. Maumelle won 32-27 over  Heber in the final contest of the camp on Tuesday afternoon.
The Panthers nearly pulled off a last-minute comeback against 2-4A conference rival Southside as guard Michael Kramer buried two three-pointers in a span of less than two minutes, trimming Heber’s deficit to three with 1:15 remaining.
But, Southside’s Cody Winkle drained a trey from left elbow while drawing contact and he completed a four-point play as the Southerners pulled away.
Kramer paced Heber with 16 points, forward Aaron Brown added six and guard Waren Thomas Olmstead contributed three, including a fall away jumper inside the lane.
Kyzer said he expects to have Schroeder and Adkins back by next week when the Panthers play Cabot in a practice game, while Smith is likely sidelined most of the summer.
