Each summer, new students come to ASU-Heber Springs to learn more about how to be college students. We offer New Student Orientation sessions to help students adjust to college life.
Some students come to campus directly from high school. These students may be accustomed to going to school, but they are not familiar with the procedures that they need to use to get things done in college. In high school, the students are held responsible for some things, but in college, students are expected to take full responsibility for themselves. This can be a shock for some students, but they have to respond to correspondence, keep deadlines, etc.
For "non-traditional" students, students who are not coming to us directly out of high school, the situation is similar. Coming from other environments such as workplaces, students may not have any idea how to take care of the matters that may arise during their college experience. They may be more mature, but they still need to know who to see, where to look, and what to do.
At ASU-Heber Springs, we will offer three "New Student Orientation" sessions this summer:
1. Friday, June 22nd, at 1:00pm
2. Thursday, July 26th, at 6:00pm
3. Friday, August 17th, at 9:00am
During these sessions, students will get to know the campus, the staff, and the processes that they will need to know to succeed in their coursework.
For students who need more information, and for those who need to learn or review strategies for learning, we offer a semester-long course entitled "Principles of Academic Success." This courses focuses in on the student's behaviors that seriously impact their success or lack thereof.
