  • A former Marvell Academy headmaster and Lady Eagles basketball coach will be inducted into the Mississippi Association of Independent School Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Saturday, Aug. 11 in Pearl, Miss. During the past 13 seasons, Mike Reans has compiled an overall record of 349-117 in girls high school basketball. From 2000 to 2012, Reans' teams have either won or shared district championships. Reans served two tenures at Marvell Academy. From 1979 to 1982, he coached boys' basketball, assisted Coach Tommy Coleman and the late David Herbert in football and started the school's baseball program. In the fall of 1997, Reans returned to Marvell Academy as headmaster. For the 1999-2000 season, he assumed the responsibilities as head coach of the Lady Eagles basketball program at the insistence of his wife and the fact that his two daughters had reached the age to participate in the sport. During his 10 years as coach of the Lady Eagles, Reans compiled an impressive record of 264-93. The Lady Eagles won 10 consecutive district titles under Reans' leadership. They were state AA runner up in 2002 and Class A State Champions in 2006 with a 37-3 record. They followed up that championship season as Class A State runner-up in 2007. Reans continued his successful coaching career at Kirk Academy in Grenada, Miss. During his three years at the Academy his teams achieved an 85-24 overall record. The Kirk Academy Raiderettes were 2010 and 2011 District Tournament winners and co-regular season champs in 2012. Reans has been in education for 38 years and coaching for 30 years. As an MAIS administrator, Reans served as an elementary principal at Delta Academy, high school principal at Magnolia Heights School and headmaster at Marvell Academy and Kirk Academy. At Delta Academy in 1992, Reans took the Delta Raiders to the Class A boys state championship. Over a 6-year period, the Raiders compiled a 113-46 record. With only 13 team members, the Reans-led Raiders reached the 1989 Class A playoffs with an 11-1 record. Reans received the district Coach of the year 18 times in football, baseball and boys and girls basketball. Twice he was honored as Coach of the Year and once each in boys and girls basketball. He was selected coach of the MAIS All-Star games for girls basketball four times, boys basketball once and baseball twice. “This honor comes from faith, learning from other coaches, being blessed with good players and assistant coaches, having an understanding wife and supportive administrators, boards, teachers and parents,” said Reans. The induction ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Clyde Muse Center on the Hinds Rankin campus. For ticket information, contact Amanda Brewer at 601-932-2007.
