  • Heber Springs running back Eddie Torres sent the crowd into a frenzy Monday at Panther Stadium by speeding around right end for a 70-yard touchdown on the Junior Panthers first play from scrimmage against Greenbrier. Greenbrier would battle back and eventually pull in front 20-14 before the Jr. Panthers countered with a 9-play, 75-yard scoring drive that ended with Dewaun Miller's 4-yard touchdown run with 13 seconds remaining. Miller, who showed a tremendous amount of power and athletic ability in the latter half of the scrimmage, recently transferred from Blytheville. After Torres scored on Heber's first snap, the Junior Panthers took an 8-0 lead when quarterback Justin Feemster rolled left off a play-action fake and hit James Ketchum for two points on the conversion. Greenbrier fired back with a 9-play, 70-yard drive capped by quarterback Denton King's 1-yard touchdown run behind center. King's two-point pass failed, leaving Heber with an 8-6 lead. Playing with a 30-minute running clock until the final minutes of the first half, Greenbrier snatched the momentum when Carter Coats pulled down an interception. Starting from their own 45 with 5:00 left in the first half, Greenbrier marched 55 yards in 12 snaps for the go-ahead score. King converted a pivotal fourth and 2 with an 11-yard keeper, then the quarterback scored from three yards out. King kept over left tackle for two more points on the conversion, pushing Greenbrier's lead to 14-8 with 31.2 seconds left in the first half. The Jr. Panthers stopped Greenbrier on the opening drive of the 20-minute second half when William Rubio pounced on a fumble at the Heber 41. The Jr. Panthers flipped the turnover into points, covering 59 yards in three plays. On second and 5, Miller sped around right end and down the sideline for a 40-yard touchdown. Greenbrier intercepted the two-point attempt, leaving the score knotted at 14-all with 8:00 left to play. Greenbrier retaliated with a 5-play, 75-yard strike highlighted by quarterback Carter Burcham's 24-yard touchdown pass to receiver Brandon Slaughter. Heber held on the two-point conversion, leaving Greenbrier's lead at 20-14. With 3:23 remaining, Heber started a 9-play, 75-yard scoring drive that included six carries for 36 yards from Miller, while Garrett Alaniz ran twice for 35 yards, including a 22-yard scamper on fourth and 5. Following Alaniz's 22-yard burst around right end, Miller pounded the ball into the end zone with a 7-yard run over left side, where he got out of bounds to stop the clock with 13 seconds left. Miller then found pay dirt on a dive up the middle, tying the game at 20-all. On the two-point conversion, Miller broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and twisted towards the goal line but was ruled inches short as the two junior high teams ended in a tie. The Junior Panthes open regular season play on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Pottsville. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
