Local SASS Cowboy Action Shooting club will host the Arkansas State Black Powder Championship shoot, October 12 through 14 at their range located at 479 Pearson Road, Heber Springs, Arkansas.
This competition features the firearms generally in use during the post civil war period, single action pistols, lever action rifles, and double barreled or exposed hammer pump action shotguns. There will be some shooters shooting smokeless powder in their firearms, but this shoot is all about having all your shells loaded with that good old black powder that fills the air with smoke, fire and the smell of sulphur.
Not only do participants shoot these old guns or their replicas, they also dress like folks did in the post civil war era or like the cowboys and cowgirls (yes we have quite a number of lady shooters) in B-Western movies. So we compete in both shooting well and looking good! The main object of all this is to have a great time! Everyone has an alias; at this shoot you might run into Ozark Red, High Card Kay, Sweet Water Sue, or Little Nacona One Shot to name a few of the ladies. Some of the cowboys might be Bad Dog Willie, Buster or Ain't Dunnit, I don't think Bad Gene Poole can make it this time.
Side matches such as Fastest Pistol, Fastest Shotgun and Long Range shooting events will be held on Friday the 12th from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with the Main Match stages being shot on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Saturday afternoon features a Cowboy 'Drive By' shooting and a target shoot with the Gatling gun. Sunday morning features Cowboy Church prior to the start of shooting.
A Gatling gun will be available for those interested in shooting it. A nominal fee will be charged to cover the owners cost for ammo etc. Visitors will be welcome and encouraged to participate.
Vendors will be present selling clothing and other artifacts of the 1860-1900 era. They welcome all shoppers.
Visitors are welcome! We only ask that you bring eye and hearing protection for your comfort and safety.
