Michelle Mobley, County Agent for Cleburne County, has announced the dates for the 2012 Master Gardener training. The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service will host five one-day per week sessions each Tuesday during the month of November and one Tuesday in December. Sessions (November 6 and 20) will be held at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View. Other sessions will be held at the West Side Baptist Church in Greers Ferry (November 13 and 27; December 3).
The training is open to anyone interested in gardening and willing to participate in one or more of the public horticultural projects sponsored by Master Gardeners throughout Cleburne County. Attendees will receive 40 hours of training by experts in basic botany, principles of horticulture, soils and fertilizers, irrigation, pest control, and pesticide use. The training will also include home vegetable and fruit production, landscaping and lawn care. This highly successful program offers gardeners an opportunity to sharpen their horticulture skills and share their knowledge with others.
First-year Master Gardeners are required to commit 40 hours of volunteer time their first year and 20 hours per year thereafter. Twenty hours of education are also required each year. The cost of the course, which includes comprehensive gardening information and all materials, is $60. The class is limited to 25 participants. The application deadline is Friday, October 19, 2012.
Trainees from Stone and Van Buren Counties will join Cleburne County registrants for the training. Upon successful completion of the course, graduates will receive certificates designating them as official Master Gardeners.
