A brilliant hit, “True Colors,” written for Cyndi Lauper earned her two Grammy Award nominations in 1986. The quirky pop icon entertained us with unique flair. Our “True Colors” can’t be repainted, and become as obvious as trying to sneak the sunrise past a rooster.
Before first light, roosters begin crowing, “America, It’s Time To Wake Up!” Others have purportedly “flown the coop” to “strut their stuff.” One was heard crowing, “it’s irresponsible spending to move forward with Obamacare,” all the while strutting in his own budget muck. “The dog ate my homework” isn’t effective with late loan payments. Arithmetic deficiency? Projecting blame helps vent the spleen; “the lawyer representing the bank ran for a judicial spot in a race in which I endorsed her opponent.” Science is not his forte either. Is it wise to get sassy with Mother Nature’s advice to “go green?” ( “I see your True Colors . . “)
Nothing like a rooster with attitude. Diagnosing Arkansas as ailing, with prescription for her recovery, demonstrates determination to turn the clock back. Just “get rid of the machine that elects Democrats.” With GOP solidarity, he’d have the “solid South” of yesteryear. Apparently, he’s still reeling from failure of the Civil War. To move forward, why would any study lean toward pitting the South against the North to determine who is most charitable? A needy person is not going to give one whit. This rooster has his head shoved so far under his “right wing” he is unable to see reality. He probably perceives the raising of over $ 2 million in Little Rock, for a multi-millionaire, as a real charitable spirit lifter. I ask,”how many hungry children would that have fed?” (“If this world makes you crazy. . .True Colors.”)
Anti-Planned Parenthood? No sex education? Maybe 16th century mindset of wearing Chastity Belts would work. Pro-Life, Anti-abortion, yet Pro-death penalty. What exception to the Sixth Commandment did I miss? (“It’s hard to take courage. .True Colors.”)
Ever wonder how well Senator Boozman sleeps since voting to throw our veterans under the bus? Yes, the same men and women in uniform that put their life in jeopardy to protect his buns. One of four Republican Senators to co-write the Veteran’s Job Bill only to then vote against it. Political obstruction has been the GOP’s priority, and they continue to show their “true colors.” (“the darkness inside you can make you feel so small. True colors.”)
Page 2 of 2 - All forms of “equality” stir constant internal class warfare. Being prejudice is as foolish as the old farmer who bought a young rooster for his hens. The old rooster, determined to not lose his harem, challenges the new rooster to a race. Once around the chicken coop will settle who will be “cock of the walk.” Off they go with the old rooster in the lead. The farmer, hearing the commotion of the cheering hens, grabs his shotgun thinking there’s a fox on the prowl. Seeing the young rooster in chase, he takes aim, fires, and blows him away. “Dang,” he mutters, “that’s the third gay rooster I’ve bought this month.” As spoken by George Clooney, “At some point in our lifetime, gay rights won’t be an issue, and everyone who stood against this civil right will look as outdated as George Wallace standing on the school steps keeping James Hood from entering the University of Alabama because he was black.” ( “Don’t be discouraged. True Colors.”)
Thomas Jefferson stated, “No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another, and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him.” Roosters are proudly crowing from Pennsylvania to eight of eleven states in the former confederacy.New ID laws have created mazes in the corridors leading to the voting booths for the poor, elder, minority, younger, and disabled. We are not moving forward when those marred by faulty methodology cause toxicity for Democracy. John Lewis was one of the thirteen original “Freedom Riders.” He has experienced the “True Colors” of unjust laws and discrimination. He doesn’t want to return to the days of Jim Crow Laws reasserted by a batch of white southerner extremists. Billy Graham once warned a white audience, “we have been proud and thought we were better than any other race, any other people. Ladies and gentlemen, we are going to stumble into hell because of our pride.” ( “It’s hard to take courage, but I see true colors shining through”) Do you? And, that’s my opinion . . . .
