Halloween revelers pack downtown Heber Springs

Ghouls, ghosts, heroes and villains.  These were just a  few of the Halloween treats to be seen on the square in Heber Springs for Scare on the Square 2012. Hundreds of children and adults formed lines around two sides of the courthouse to get their share of the pounds of candy being handed out from trunks on 3rd street.  Businesses and organizations lined the street to give the kids, and some of the adults, their special Halloween treats.  At 6pm, the winners of the first annual, and wildly popular, Scarecrow Stroll were announced.  Snagging first place was the Kaiser Family, with their gravity defying scarecrow located on the corner of 3rd and Main.  Second place was awarded to the Cleburne County Master Gardeners and third place went to Generations.  Choosing winners was a tough decision as all participants did an amazing job with their scarecrows.  A special mention goes out to Ellen Hobgood’s scarecrow twin, also located on the corner of 3rd and Main.  The annual costume contest kicked off at 6:30.  Picking winners for all the creative costumes was tough, but in the end, the grand prize went to Zachary Kelly for his stunning headless man costume.  Kelly also won last year’s grand prize when he amazed crowds with his Beetlejuice costume. This was another successful year for Scare on the Square and the inclusion of the Scarecrow Stroll was a great addition, showing that the event only gets better with each passing year.  Shown below are only a few of the photos taken of the event.  To see more photos, check out our photo galleries at www.thesuntimes.com
