For several years now the Reapers of Reaper Farms have donated the profit from one acre of corn to students at Pangburn Middle School.
The students travel to the farm and watch as corn is harvested and discuss everything from soil requirements to uses of feed corn. The farm visit is followed by classes conducted by White County Extension Agent Keith Martin, in which students grind corn, learn about its uses, and calculate the profit from their donated acre.
Students are then asked to choose a charity to whom the donation will be delivered.
In years past, they did not allow the students to buy things for the school, such as playground equipment etc. However, this year, those options were offered. After much discussion, the students voted to donate their money to Children’s Hospital in Little Rock.
Sometimes it takes the hearts and actions of children to remind everyone of how they are supposed to be. The Pangburn students did not use their money selfishly. Instead they chose to try to help others, and continue to be happy with what they already have.
Pangburn Middle School is asking the communities to follow this example. They will be sponsoring their second annual Toy Drive for Children’s Hospital.
Please help bring some joy to less fortunate children that do not get to spend their Christmas at home with family. Area businesses and individuals who would like to participate may contact Pangburn Middle School at 501-728-4912.
