Trailing by one, the West Side Lady Eagles closed the first quarter with a 9-0 run then held off a third quarter rally by White County Central's Lady Bears to complete a 66-50 victory on Tuesday evening in Greers Ferry. Sophomore point guard Abby Turney paced West Side (2-6) with 20 points, four assists and five steals, while sophomore forward Alexis Barnes followed with 18 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Whitney England contributed 16 points, connecting on 4-of-13 shots from beyond the arc. England sank three of her four three-pointers in the third quarter, including two during a 10-0 West Side run that helped quell the Lady Bears, who had pulled within three at 33-30 when post player Careagain Finley hit a jump shot from right elbow. WCC (1-4) never came closer than 10 points the rest of the way. West Side Coach Shane Davis said this was his young team's most complete effort of the season. “This was our best game all around by far. We were more active on defense and played every possession hard, causing 29 turnovers, while only having 16 and five in the first half, which is a pretty good night being such a young team and we tied on the offensive glass 9-9 which is a first of the year. “It's good to get our first home win of the year, and we needed some momentum heading into conference play with Bradford and Timbo next week,” added Davis. Finley paced the Lady Bears with a game-high 22 points, including nine during WCC's third quarter comeback. Guard Allik Carter added 12 points for WCC and guard Katy Tucker finished with eight points. Following Turney, Barnes and England's combined 54 points for West Side, post player Karissa Passmore had six points, post player Melissa Hendrickson added four points and guard Carra Duncan had two points on a driving bank shot during the Lady Eagles' 10-0 run in the third quarter. The Lady Eagles host Bradford on Tuesday.
