  • Greers Ferry Chili Challenge still going strong after 30 years

  • For 30 years now Cleburne County residents have been gathering to eat chili at West Side School Cafeteria. If you did not attend this year, plan on attending next year for good food, fun, community fellowship and being part of local tradition.
    Chamber President JoAnn Wanat handed out one plaque to The Real Estate Center for attending the cook off all 30 years. The Real Estate Center is now owned by Dave Carlton but Bob Vierierrger, who started The Real Estate Center 49 years ago, was also in attendance to accept the award.
    Many door prizes from local businesses held the crowd over and a live pie auction by auctioneer Mike Stark had the crowd on the edge of their seats. Host Tom Brannon from KHTV 11 joked about the pronunciation of Inger’s Butikk was hilarious. “No one needs a tick there” Brannon joked. Brannon has hosted the event for the past 10 years.
    This year twenty-one head cooks and their assistants simmered and seasoned to win top honors at this years Greers Ferry Chili Challenge. Businesses, cooks and assistant cooks included: Clearview Inspections, Sue Dewberry and Jodi Pinasco; Greers Ferry Grocery, Jody, Sam & Justin Corpier; First Arkansas Bank & Trust, Regina Davis and Julie Peters; Angela’s Flowers & Gifts, Dennis and Angela McDaniel; The Real Estate Center, Corey Carlton and Michelle Matte; Cornerstone Pharmacy, Chad Vance and Kelly Perkins; Inger’s Butikk, Kathy Groom and Pat O’Dell; Marty for Sheriff, Marty Moss and Viki McElroy; Jerry Holmes for County Judge, Jo and Jerry Holmes; John Payton for State Representative, Rhonda and John Payton; Greers Ferry Fire Department, Jay England and Byron Sawrie; Westside Baptist Church, Dan Gladdon and Millie Lee; Dennis Knapp for State Representative, Dennis and Pam Knapp; JR’s Hickory House, Vicki Beall and Joy Lamb; Red River of Life Church, Brenda White and Heather Dunn; Stringbeanz, Mariane Lucas and Crystal Lott; Classic Cars & Cookie Jars, Yvonne Baron and Cindy Phillips; Community Water Service, Reta Heigle and Robin Wood; Larry Davis, JD Davis and Larry Davis; Cynthia Keller CPA PA, Steve and Brad Smith; Josh Johnston for Sheriff, Josh and Jennifer Johnston.
    Winners for the 30th Annual Greers Ferry Chili Challenge are: First Place Angela’s Flowers, Second Place Jerry Holmes, and Third Place Greers Ferry Fire Department. Booth and table decoration winners are: First Place Cornerstone Pharmacy, Second Place Stringbeanz, and Third Place Larry Davis.
