Are you anything like me? I love to curl up on these cold winter nights with a throw tucked around me, in front of a lit fireplace complete with a good book. That is cozy and warm to me.
Of course, there are several ways of keeping cozy and warm in the middle of our frigid winter. Here's a few economical ways to consider.
Tips for keeping a cozy warm home:
Clothes: This is not the time to use more energy, whether it is electricity or gas, to keep warm. In other words, do not turn your heat up to 80 degrees so you can continue to wear shorts and summer clothes. Warm clothing is especially designed to help keep you warm and comfortable.
There are thermal underwear, woolies-(sweaters, leggings, etc) sweats and warm sox. As we are told, layers are very helpful in the cold winter months.
Food and drink: This time of year I switch to my winter menus. I use hot drinks like hot tea, cocoa, and lots of soups and stews, seafood gumbo, jambalaya and of courses that old standby, chili. These are stick to the ribs and great tummy warmers for you and your entire family.

Your Cozy Home: This is the time to seal-seal-seal it. Use calking, double and triple panes of glass and sometimes the good old plastic sheeting to seal windows. Use whatever works and you can afford. Put weatherization around doors, windows. Also seal your heaters with sealers that that are designed to work with them. Seal around H/A vents from the metal to your floor hole, so that the only air that comes in is the air you want to come in. (Right now that would be heat)
Just make sure to block any warm heat from getting out-or cold air from coming in. Check with the experts on keeping your home economically warm, and cozy. They have new ways to winterize and old standby's ready and waiting for you.
Be sure to ask about the R Value of insulation. Attics can be added to easily – if that is needed.
If you have rooms that you very seldom use, close them off, close their registers, and keep those doors closed. No need to heat them if you are not using them. Save the heat for where you and your family are.
I don't know about you but I love ambiance. As stated earlier, I love curling up in front of a lit fireplace, with a good book. It looks and makes me feel cozy and warm. Of course you need to make sure your fireplace as efficient as possible. And now there are electric fireplaces that you can add easily to your décor too.
