  • Sixth-seeded West Side, without a doubt the youngest team in the Greers Ferry Lake area, extended its season by at least one week by defeating Shirley 51-38 on Monday then upsetting third-seeded Bradford 53-46 on Tuesday at the 1A-2 South District Tournament in Midland. In Tuesday's elimination game versus Bradford, sophomore point guard Abby Turney led the Lady Eagles (13-19) with 20 points and three assists, while sophomore Alexis Barnes added 13 points ¬ all in the second half. Barnes also contributed six rebounds and four steals despite sitting out much of the first half with foul trouble. “This was a huge win for us,” said West Side Coach Shane Davis. “It guarantees us a spot in regionals at our place next week. I am very proud of these girls. “We started four sophomores and brought one sophomore and two freshmen off the bench and they really had a big impact on the game. Our defense kept us in the game and we executed down the stretch on offense and made free throws to ice it. Now we need to not get complacent because we know a good Concord team that has beat us twice by 5 and 10 awaits us in the semis,” added Davis. West Side, which lost to Bradford twice in the regular season by a combined 23 points, finished 15 of 20 from the charity stripe and connected on 6 of 16 shots from beyond the arc. The Lady Eagles grabbed seven offensive rebounds, compared to four for Bradford. Sophomore post player Melissa Hendrickson added 10 points and six rebounds in West Side's win over Bradford, freshman post player Gracie Waters grabbed seven rebounds and erased four shots while freshman forward Ashley Gentry had five points and four rebounds. In Monday's win over Shirley, Turney led the Lady Eagles with 15 points, seven assists and five steals and Barnes followed with 10 points, four assists and three steals. Also for West Side, sophomore guard Carra Duncan had six points and four rebounds, Gentry added six points, Waters swatted four shots and Hendrickson pulled down seven rebounds. The Lady Eagles forced 16 turnovers in their win over Shirley, while crushing the Lady Blue Devils on the glass, finishing with 16 offensive rebounds compared to two for Shirley. “We had more assists (13) and steals (12) than we had turnovers (11). That is always a good combination,” said Davis.
