The Heber Springs Marching Panther Band and Pride of Heber Concert Band received top honors in all contests and festivals attended this academic year. The band entertained audiences at halftime during Panther football games and also represented the community of Heber Springs at the UAM Marching Contest in Monticello and Region IX Marching Contest in Russellville where the band received the highest ratings possible from all judges. Following the marching band season the band organized into its most important ensemble, the concert band. The band delighted audiences at their annual Holiday concert held in the Panther Den and again represented Heber Springs at the Region IX Concert Festival in Conway where the band received a top rating in performance and a top rating in reading a selection of music after only 7 minutes of study during which time the band could not practice the selection but could only study it with the expert guidance of director Traci Jernigan. Due to the first division ratings received in marching, contest, and sight-reading the band will receive the coveted Sweepstakes award from the Arkansas Band and Orchestra Association. This is the eighth consecutive year the band has received the award.
The band program continues its tradition of excellence that is now 30 years running. In addition, numerous seniors continue to receive band tuition scholarships to state universities with 21 alumni and graduating seniors attending or that will be attending college with all or part of their tuition paid by a band scholarship. Director Traci Jernigan states “we continue our tradition of excellence only through the hard work and dedication of our students of course, but also because of the tremendous support shown by this community, band parents, board of education, and school administrators. We hope to continue not only entertaining our community members with halftime performances, concerts, and jazz band performances, but also to provide our parents and students with a great bang for their buck in helping our seniors attain tuition scholarships through music.”
The next performance of the band will be at the annual Spring Concert May 13th in the new gym.
