  • In the middle of a five-game home stand, West Side rocked Calico Rock 12-2 on Monday before falling to Nemo Vista 15-7 on Tuesday in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated. West Side led Nemo Vista 2-0 after three innings, but injuries began to take a toll as ace pitcher Ben Hargrove left the mound following the first inning and catcher Austin Kirkland exited with an arm injury. Down 8-4 in the sixth, the Eagles (2-3) had a chance to get back in the game when Hargrove, who moved to first base, sent a line drive to gap with the bases loaded. But Nemo Vista's center fielder tracked it down, making a running grab to end the inning. The Red Hawks (4-1) put the game away in the top of the seventh, plating seven runs with two outs as the Eagles struggled defensively, committing four errors. “The boys really battled against one of the top six or seven teams in Class A,” said West Side Coach Shane Davis. “We have to get our arms in shape, and make the plays defensively if we want be able to compete with the better teams like Nemo, and hopefully in a month or so we will get there.” In Monday's triumph over Calico Rock, Hargrove (3-for-4) paced the Eagles with three hits, including a triple, plus two RBI and three runs. Dalton Treece (3-for-4) also recorded three hits, while scoring two runs and driving home another. Hayden Gilmore (2-for-4) and Bryce Hipp (2-for-4) each finished with two hits, two runs and one RBI, while Mason Treece (2-for-3) added two hits, including one RBI. Kirkland (1-for-2) contributed two runs and one RBI. Kirkland and Jimmy Thomas pitched for the Eagles, combining for six strikeouts in five innings. West Side competes in the “South-Nemo” Classic this weekend with games to be played at South Side Bee Branch and Nemo Vista.
