  • The Stuttgart Police Department is investigating a possible arson and residential burglary. The department has a suspect in the case, but is not releasing any information at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
Officers were dispatched to the home located in 400 block of South Wood Street Sunday at 11:39 a.m. after the Stuttgart Fire Department was dispatched. Officers assisted with traffic control in the area until SFD Chief Billy Burns told officers the back door of the home had been forced open. Firefighters had also found the front door open, but not forced.
A witness on the scene told officials he went inside the home to see if anyone was inside. No one was inside the home, according to the SPD incident report that as released Monday. The witness noticed the homes oven was on and reported that information to firefighters several times.
“The fire department reported that when the home was entered they observed the kitchen stove was on and (they) immediately turned it off as they battled the fire,” SPD Ptl. Eric Brown wrote in his report. “Upon further investigation the origin of the fire seemed to have started in a bedroom on the north side of the home. I observed the bedroom had been completely destroyed and no obvious electrical cause could be found.”
The homeowner, a 44-year-old man, arrived and reported one muzzleloader, three rifles and two shotguns missing from the home.
The incident has been turned over to the SPD Criminal Investigation Division, who will be investigating the incident further.
