Eugene P. Horton, 91, passed away Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013 at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa. He was born January 16, 1922 on a farm in Adair County, Iowa, the son of William and Nellie Horton and resided in Whiting at Pleasant View.
Gene married Kathryn Johnson in 1945 in Correctionville, Iowa. During his career in the United States Marine Corps, Gene & Kathryn lived in numerous places during his tours of duty and later retirement. Favorites were Swansboro, NC; Rochelle, IL; Heber Springs, AR and Sloan, IA.
Gene was a graduate of Plato High School in IL; and held positions with Toastmaster, Elgin Watch Company and as Assistant Manager for Woolworth’s Department Store before enlisting in the USMC in 1942. He served 20 years in the Marines, seeing action and serving in New Caledonia, Baniks, the Russell Islands, Guadalcanal, Hawaii, Japan & Okinawa.
He held numerous positions during his military career including Inspector/Instructor Staff in Philadelphia, PA; Danville, IL and Memphis, TN.
Always an avid outdoorsman, after retirement he managed Lindsey’s Trout Dock at Rainbow Resort on the Little Red River near Heber Springs; wrote the Outdoor Column for the Ogle County Life Newspaper in Rochelle, IL; fished; gardened and enjoyed life.
Surviving are sons Walter G. Horton (and wife Veronica) of Sloan, IA, and William G. Horton of Boxford, MA; and one brother, Melvin Horton; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Kathryn; his Daughter, Cynthia Stawick; Grandson Michael Horton; four brothers & four sisters.
Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting for both Eugene and his wife, Kathryn who passed away on March 11, 2013.
