Mel LaVier died April 13, 2013
Mel LaVier, a resident of Edgemont, AR, passed away April 13, 2013 at home. He was born October 28, 1936 in Watertown, NY, to Joseph P. and Agnes House LaVier. He was raised in Daytona Beach, FL, until he joined the Army. In the Army Mel was awarded The Bronze Star Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Combat Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, National Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal (6th award), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Campaign Stars, Meritorious Unit Commendations, 2 Overseas Service Bars, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Vietnam Civil Actions Medal 1st Class. Mel served with Special Forces in Vietnam and was a distinguished member of the Army Gold Knights parachute team.
After retiring from the Army in 1974, he became the Director of Quality Assurance at
CLEO WRAP in Memphis, TN, from which he retired in 1999. He retired to Edgemont, AR, where he enjoyed fishing, 4-wheeling, and motorcycle riding as well as his wonderful neighbors on Mystic Isle.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as a granddaughter, Michelle Stuart.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Carel LaVier; sons Chris (Donna) LaVier of Knoxville, TN, and Richie (Wendi) LaVier of Surrey, England; daughter Andrea
(Greg) Hamilton of Greers Ferry, AR; grandchildren, Alex and Jessica Hamilton and Keira May LaVier; and great grandson Jax Hamilton.
Memorial service will be on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at West Side Baptist Church.
