  • West Side's Keeleigh Davis finished 4-for-4 with two singles, a double and a triple while driving home three runs, propelling the Lady Eagles to a 6-5 win and season sweep of Cleburne County rival Concord on Thursday in 1A-2 South Conference play in Greers Ferry. Facing West Side pitcher Ashley Gentry, who went the distance in a gritty performance, the Lady Pirates took the lead in the top of the first inning as pitcher Sydney Harlan doubled to left field and scored on Jaycie Freeman's RBI. Harlan worked around a double by Davis in the first inning, eventually leaving runners stranded at the corners, but Gentry limited Concord to an infield single by Erin Hendricks in the top of the second and West Side took the lead in the bottom half, scoring two runs on two hits. Carra Duncan walked and Karissa Passmore was hit-by-a-pitch to ignite the inning, then Josie Phillips reached on a fielder's choice that forced Duncan at third. With two outs and runners at second and third after a wild pitch, Davis delivered a 2 RBI single through the hole on left side, plating Passmore and Josie Phillips as the Lady Eagles jumped on top, 2-1. Following an infield single by Sydney Phillips, Harlan induced a pop-up taken by Freeman, who made the play from her catcher's position. Concord (3-5, 3-4), which fell to West Side 20-7 in its season opener, reclaimed the lead in the top of the third with two runs on three hits, starting when Mary Thompson pulled a one-out single to left field. After Freeman reached on a fielder's choice that forced Thompson at second, Emanda Reeves crushed an RBI double to right field, scoring Freeman and tying the score at 2-all. With two outs, Mandy Thompson roped an RBI double to left field that scored Reeves as Concord took a 3-2 lead before Gentry retired the side on a chopper back to the mound. West Side, which improved to 5-3 in conference, responded with one run to tie the game in the bottom of the third. After Whitney England reached on an error, Gentry helped her own cause by nailing an RBI double to left field, scoring England for a 3-3 tie. In the top of the fourth, Gentry worked around a leadoff walk issued to Madison Robbins, plus a two-out single by Harlan, getting out of the frame when Sydney Phillips took care of a ground ball to third base. Harlan pitched around a leadoff single by Davis in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lady Pirates failed to take advantage of two errors in the fifth and West Side captured the lead for good in the bottom half. After Gentry reached on an error, Duncan slammed a double to left center, giving the Lady Eagles two runners in scoring position with no outs. Passmore then sent a chopper to third that was misplayed, allowing Gentry to score as West Side took a one-run lead, which moments later grew to 5-3 when Duncan scored on a wild pitch. Harlan retaliated with a strikeout before Emily Southerland drilled a single to right field and stole second. With two outs, Davis delivered again, this time roping an RBI triple to the alley in left center, scoring Southerland as West Side built a 6-3 lead. Concord refused to go down without a tussle as Hendricks led off the sixth with a triple to the gap in right center and Maghin England drove Hendricks home with an infield single. Harlan was hit-by-a-pitch and Mary Thompson beat out a bunt single, loading the bases for Freeman, who flared an RBI single over first base, plating Maghin England as the Lady Pirates pulled within one at 6-5. With the bases loaded, Gentry dug deep and managed to pitch out of the jam, retiring the next three batters, including two by strikeout while preserving the Lady Eagles' one-run lead. After Harlan held the Lady Eagles scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, Gentry took the circle in the seventh looking to slam the door. Gentry retired Robbins on a grounder back to the circle, but Hendricks walked, placing the tying run at first base. Hendricks was caught trying to steal second on a strong throw from West Side catcher Whitney England and Gentry retired Concord's final batter on a fly-out to center field as the Lady Eagles secured a 6-5 victory.
