  • West Side won its third straight game over a top 3 opponent as junior pitcher Bryce Hipp tossed a complete game while striking out 17 batters and sophomore Brandon Carr drove home six runs, vaulting the red-hot Eagles over Midland 12-6 on Monday evening in the semifinals of the 1A-2 South District Tournament. Only one week after drilling the Mustangs 15-6 on Senior Day in Greers Ferry, the Eagles showed their recent success is certainly not a fluke. “This was a huge win for us from the standpoint that it guarantees us playing a three or four [seed] in the first round of regionals rather than a one or two,” said West Side Coach Shane Davis. “Bryce pitched his tail off. He had all three of his pitches working, kept them off balance all night and Hayden Gilmore caught a good game for him. Our bats stayed hot, which helped us overcome a five run inning in which we committed three errors in the 4th. Our kids did a great job of executing. We got them on, got them over and got them in all night. We had some huge two out RBI hits. Sophomore Brandon Carr had three of them,” added Davis. Carr led the Eagles (11-10) at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with a home run and 6 RBI. Senior Jimmy Thomas (3-for-4) also had three hits and scored 2 runs. Bryce Hipp (1-for-2), junior Ben Hargrove (1-for-3), senior Austin Kirkland (1-for-3) and freshman Blaine Hipp, who hit his first career home run, each collected a hit for the Eagles, who finished with 12 hits and 9 stolen bases. Joining Thomas with 2 runs scored was Kirkland, Bryce Hipp and Hargrove, who also drove home two runs. West Side plays top-seeded South Side Bee Branch in the district championship game today at 5 p.m. at Midland.
