  • Heber Springs senior Clint Ligon finished third for the second consecutive season in the Arkansas State Decathlon, which concluded on Thursday at Fayetteville High School. Ligon compiled 6, 240 points to finish 128 points behind runner-up Dan Spickes of Rogers Heritage and 635 points behind champion Alex Miles of Rogers Heritage, who cleared 15' in the pole vault and won the discus (141') to pull away with 6,875 points. Heber senior Ethan Bly, who led the 50th annual decathlon after five events, finished ninth with 5,649 points and Panther junior Brock Ballard placed 35th with 4,597 points. Ligon finished second in the 110 hurdles (15.60) to earn 778 points while briefly taking the lead on Thursday before Miles (15') and Spickes (16') vaulted ahead by posting two of the top three marks in the pole vault. Ligon alsoplaced third in the 400 (50.51), finished fourth in the high jump (6' .75”), tied Bly for sixth in the long jump (20' 5”), finished seventh in the discus (110' 6”), placed ninth in the triple jump (41' 7.75”) and took 11th in the 100 (11.48). Bly led after Wednesday's five events powered by a first-place finish in the shot put (46' 8”), plus runner-up in both the 100 (11.18) and 400 (50.41). Bly also placed second in the discus (132' 1”). Ballard gained 854 points in the 1500, placing runner-up with a time of 4:13.83, just behind winner Dino Andrade of Springdale Har-Ber (4:09.03). Ballard also placed fourth in the 400 with a time of 50.71, just behind Ligon, Bly and Har-Ber's Sain-Thomas Mathew, who set a state decathlon record (49.26). Spickes, who finished second, grew up in Quitman before moving to northwest Arkansas around 7th grade. Crossett junior Kelsey Herman amassed a heptathlon-record 4,844 points, outlasting Springdale Har-Ber's Payton Stumbaugh (4,538).
