Residents of Quitman can now claim a modern library as one of the attractions of this thriving community. The new library opened its doors to the public on Wednesday. Children and adults alike visited the new facility obtaining library cards and perusing the wide selection of books available. “We had 53 cards issued the first day,” said Cleburne County Library Director Zac Cothren.
The city of Quitman approached the Cleburne County Library about the possibility of opening a branch in their community a few years ago. After a long process of obtaining necessary grants and revenue, construction of the state of the art facility was completed on January 1 of this year. Cothren said they began processing books for the branch for some time prior to the opening in order to give the library good selection for opening day. “The library had almost 5000 books on opening day and can hold up to 8 to 10 thousand,” said Cothren. In addition to the large book selection, the library also has 2 computers that can be used by the public and a 3rd computer in the children’s section that can be used by students and for other educational purposes. Wi-Fi is also available to the public.
In addition to the library, the building also houses a safe room that will be available for use by the public should the community be threatened with severe weather, such as a tornado. It also houses vehicles for Quitman’s emergency services.
Library cards are free and anyone interested in obtaining one should take some form of photo ID with a current address. If your ID doesn’t have a current address, take a utility bill, phone bill, etc., as proof of residence. The cards are available to any Cleburne County resident, people that work in the community, people that own property in the community, and in surrounding communities adjacent to Cleburne County.
An official grand opening ceremony is tentatively planned for later in the summer.
The new library is located at 5904 Heber Springs Rd West (Hwy 25) in Quitman and is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon to 4:30. It is also open on Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. If you would like more information about the branch, contact them at 501-589-2332.
