The Sun-Times is always talking about the gems of Cleburne County, and this past weekend we lost one of those gems. Sitting Justice of the Peace Bobby Mooney (74) passed away at his home Saturday. Mooney was the JP for District 7 since 1999 after having retired from the 16th Judicial Court District as a probation officer. Friends and family poured out to honor him at his funeral Wednesday as the community gathered to offer words of condolences and remembrance.
“He was down to earth and could talk to anybody,” said fellow JP Steve Choate. “He just cared about people”
County Judge Jerry Holmes, who spoke at the funeral, praised Mooney’s passion for life. “Bobby loved life and he loved people,” said Holmes on Tuesday. “He’s been a friend to not just me, but also my family. I’ve been blessed to have him not only on the Court but also as a friend.”
Mooney’s passing leaves a vacancy on the Quorum Court. According to Holmes, a resolution declaring the position vacant will come before Court at their next meeting. After the vacancy is declared, the position will be filled by an appointment of Governor Mike Beebe until the next election.
