  • This title is not an exaggeration; it is real- so please bear with me.

I am sharing a doctor’s viewpoint on an element of nutrition.  This doctor, an MD, has impressed me because he has gone beyond mainstream medicine to find the root causes of many illnesses.  He has dedicated himself, using his career to looking for and finding not just the symptoms of illness, but digging to eradicate the root causes of chronic illness.  He calls his medical practice –Functional (alternative) Medicine.

I love it when a doctor that is trained in mainstream drugs and procedures will get out there and dig for the actual cause of health problems.

This MD is a popular and highly respected family physician, a six-time New York Times bestselling author, and an internationally recognized leader in his field. Through his private practice, educational efforts, writing, research, advocacy and public-policy work, he encourages others access to Functional Medicine, and to widen the understanding and practice of it, empowering them to stop managing symptoms and instead –to treat the underlying causes of illness, thereby also tackling our chronic-disease epidemic.

    WOW!

Today I am sharing much of what he calls his secret weapon against illness with you.

This means that this physician is not content to just use a bandage approach to medicine.  That is the type of doctor that just uses drugs to cover up the symptoms.  I feel as if his is a much more effective way of actually helping people that so desperately needs help.

The doctor I am focusing on is Mark Hyman and he tells us that if a person is deficient in magnesium he is twice as likely to die!  And yes, he does call magnesium, which is considered a lowly and such an inexpensive mineral, one of his secret weapons against disease.

So why is this a Secret Weapon against Disease?

As Dr. Hyman informs us, magnesium is a critical component of a crash cart in the ER.  As such it supplies magnesium to be used for those with life threatening arrhythmias, or an unhealthy heartbeat.  People are set up with an IV of magnesium, as physicians realize the patient is very magnesium deficient.  This mineral is also used if a person is severely constipated, or needs to get ready for a colostomy.

He also tells us that magnesium may be responsible for 300 enzymatic reactions.  Magnesium is found in all tissues of the body, but especially in the muscle, bone and brain, which is why regular blood tests do not work with magnesium.  Only about 1% is found in the blood, the rest is being used throughout the body.

Magnesium is so important that there are over 3500 medical references on magnesium deficiency.

Yes, it is truly important, but, because it is an inexpensive mineral and not a drug it is nearly always ignored.  It has been called more powerful than a drug, which is why it is used in life threatening and emergency situations such as seizures and heart failure in the hospital.

Many experts, such as Dr. Hyman, tell us to go by the symptoms rather than run a test for magnesium deficiency.  If you have any of these symptoms you do have a magnesium deficiency:  menstrual cramps, twitches, insomnia, irritability, are anxious, have autism, (brain issues) sense of loud noises, ADD, palpitations, angina, constipation, spasms, headaches, migraines, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, asthma, kidney stones, diabetes, obesity, osteoporoses, high blood pressure, PMS, irritable bladder, irritable bowel, reflux, trouble swallowing and so many more symptoms.
Dr. Mark Hyman further states, "Anything that is tight, irritable, cramped, and stiff -- whether it is a body part or an even a mood -- is a sign of magnesium deficiency."
There are a lot of symptoms of magnesium deficiency, as that mineral is utilized throughout the entire body.

Magnesium deficiency may be linked to inflammation in the body and is demonstrated by C - reactive protein levels.

Don’t take any one person’s word for it.  Check this out for yourselves.  Learn why we are so deficient and what to do to correct this deficiency.
