Heber Springs senior Kate Reese edged Newport's Abbey Jones on the final hole, earning medalist honors while leading the Lady Panthers to the 2-4A District Tournament championship on Tuesday at Stonelink Golf Course in Little Rock.
“I am extremely proud of how she (Reese) showed a lot of toughness and maturity as a senior,” said Heber Coach Gaye Stark.
Reese finished with an 18-hole score of 92, junior Lawson Hamilton added a score of 98 and junior Delaney Grubbs shot a round of 104 to combine for Heber's winning total of 294. Stuttgart (325) placed second and Southside Batesville (340) took third.
“The girls played really well,” said Stark. “It was a beautiful day. I was very happy. It's been a fun year with this group.”
The Lady Panthers advance to the 4A State Tournament, which will be held at Thunder Bayou in Blytheville on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
The Panthers finished third, one spot shy of qualifying for state as a team. Lonoke won district with a three-player total of 248 and Stuttgart placed runner-up ¬ seven strokes ahead of Heber (262).
Senior Waren Thomas Olmstead fired a round of 82 to qualify for state along with junior teammate Jacob Joy, who finished with a score of 89. Sophomore Chase Gallaway holed out at 91 to complete the Panthers' three-player total and freshman Jordan Adkins (105) also competed for Heber.
Olmstead and Joy will play as individuals at state on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Thunder Bayou.
