Heber Springs sophomore Katherine Gilbrech won the 2-4A District tennis singles tournament for the second straight season on Monday at Lyon College in Batesville. Along with Gilbrech, Heber's tennis team qualified four players for state as freshman Jack Gardner placed third in singles, while seniors Austin “Red” Adkins and Brock Ballard took second in doubles. Gilbrech breezed to the title by defeating Stuttgart's Meredith Maier (6-1, 6-0) in the opening round, Clinton's Zoe Tester (6-2, 6-0) in the semifinal round and Stuttgart's Madison Hopson (6-0, 6-1) in the championship. Gardner started strong with a (6-1, 6-0) victory over Cave City's Trey Wann. After dropping his semifinal match versus Stuttgart's Dee Dickson (2-6, 0-6), Gardner bounced back to qualify for state with an 8-3 consolation round win over Southside Batesville's Nick Warner. Adkins and Ballard posted an undefeated record in the regular season to earn a first round bye and opened tournament play with a (6-1, 6-1) win over Cave City partners Ben Landers and Piero Dito. But Clinton's Cody Lowder and Zakk Knoerr defeated the Heber tandem (4-6, 6-4, 4-6) in the doubles championship. Catherine Redd of Heber Springs nearly qualified for state for the second consecutive season as she opened tournament play with a (6-1, 6-4) victory over Southside Batesville's Kessie Jenkins. But Hopson topped Redd (1-6, 4-6) in the semifinal round and Tester edged Redd (8-6) in the consolation round, which determined the final state qualifier. The 4A State Tournament will be held Oct. 21-22 in Arkadelphia.
