Vernon E. Helms, age 67, of Ida, Arkansas, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at McClellan Veterans Administration Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Vernon was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War and served as Chief of the Tumbling Shoals-Ida Fire Department over twenty years. He also was a local cattle farmer for years.
Vernon was preceded in death by his mother, Nola (Reed) Helms, and his father, Ray V. Helms.
He is survived by
his sister, Norma Jo Green (Charles Hugh);
one nephew, Wesley McPherson (Holly) and children;
one niece, Deidra Hilton (Marc) and children;
and hosts of other relatives and friends.
Vernon was pretty much a loner all of his life, and he really enjoyed going to Mountain View each weekend and listening to his favorite bluegrass music live or just riding around for hours and listening to his many bluegrass tapes and CDs. His only other real interests were his fire department and his cattle.
Visitation was Thursday, October 10 at Olmstead Funeral Home Chapel, and graveside services will be held on Friday, October 11, at 11:00 a.m. at Miller Cemetery at Ida with both military and fire department services.
