A memorial celebration for Erve Dewayne Shepard will be held 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2013 in the Robert Lee Brown Memorial Chapel.
Erve Dewayne Shepard was born on May 11, 1961 in Helena to Jimmy and Rosie Lee Shepard. He was the eighth of 14 children. He was a member of the Overcomer Covenant Church in Auburn, Wash. where he served on the Overcomer Covenant Usher and Greeter's Board. He was a loving husband and father who loved and enjoyed basketball, football, music and traveling. His mother, Rosie Lee Shepard, preceded him in death. After earning his bachelor's and master's degrees Shepard coached and taught in several Dallas and Houston, Texas public schools. He became principal of Eliza Miller Junior High School in Helena West-Helena then at a Memphis, Tenn. high school. His final position as an educator was in Tacoma, Wash. at Stewart Middle School where he worked as an assistant principal. He attended Helena Crossing Elementary, Eliza Miller Junior High and Central High School graduating in 1980. He earned an associate's degree in education from West Ark Community College (1982); bachelor's degree in education (1990); master's degree in education from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville (1992) and a second master's degree in divinity from Faith Angelical Seminary (2009). He completed two Wisdom for Life certificates in church leadership and ministry in 2001 and 2002. He was a licensed real estate agent in the Lakewood/Tacoma, Wash. area. He was involved in many organizations including the YTB Travel Agent Club. He was also the recipient of various awards. He was selected to the McDonald's Basketball All-Conference team by the coaches of the member institutions in recognition of his outstanding play (1980). He was inducted into the “University of Arkansas at Fort Smith Hall of Fame” in 2012. Survivors include his beloved wife of 20 years, Glenda McGowen Shepard; a son, Jason Shepard; daughters Elyssa Denae Shepard and Ena Nicole Shepard; a grandson, Jayden Shepard; his father, Jimmy Shepard Sr.; brothers, Jimmy (Carolyn) Sheppard Jr. of Choctaw, Okla.; Donald Shepard of Plano, Texas; Michael Shepard of Shakopee, Minn., Morris (Cindy) Shepard of Frisco, Texas; Ronnie (Zenita) Shepard of Stuttgart, Alvin (Jennifer Shepard) of Garland, Texas; sisters, Linda Tate of Chicago, Ill.; Carol (Enyi) Okoh of Memphis, Tenn.; Phyllis Sheppard of Memphis, Sherry (Timothy) Conner of Rockland, Calif.; Merina Shepard of McKinney, Texas; Ella (Michael Thompson) of New Orleans, La. and Frances Bland of Shakopee, Minn.; two sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins , friends and a extensive number of church members. Erve Dewayne Shepard is deeply missed by his family, relatives and friends. You will always be the wonderful husband, great dad, (beloved papa), loving brother, supportive uncle and best friend. He was a man of deep faith who taught us to love unconditionally and to live life to the fullest and to always do our best.
