Heber Springs senior point guard Waren Thomas Olmstead dropped a career-high 26 points as the Panthers defeated former fierce rival Mountain View 63-48 on Wednesday in the first round of the Mark Martin Automotive Lyon College Invitational held at Southside Batesville.
"He had the game of his life," Heber Coach Kevin Kyzer said of Olmstead, who also collected two steals and five assists without committing a turnover.
The Panthers (4-2) jumped out to a 39-25 lead at half and put the game away in the fourth quarter. "We haven't been able to put together a complete game all year," said Kyzer. "We put together three good quarters the first, second and fourth quarter. We got outscored by seven in the third quarter, but we kinda got it back together and finished strong. I felt like we wore them out a little bit because our transition broke loose in the fourth quarter," added Kyzer.
Heber advances to play reigning 2A champion Cedar Ridge tonight at 7:15 p.m. at Lyon College. The matchup features two Division-1 caliber players with Heber forward Mason Schroeder, who has signed with Air Fore, going up against Cedar Ridge forward Spencer Reaves, who is in the midst of the recruiting process.
"They like to play fast and get it up and down," said Kyzer. "They are strong, athletic and shoot the ball real well. I think that is the style of ball we like to play. It's definitely worth the ticket to see that game Friday night. There will be a lot of people there."
In his second game in a Panther uniform, swingman Wille Adkins scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Schroeder followed with 13 points and eight rebounds, guard Austin "Red" Adkins had five points and forward Michael Kramer chipped in three points and six rebounds.
