  • Riverview closed the first half with an 11-0 run and never looked back, eliminating Heber Springs 60-51 on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Lyon College Invitational Tournament.
    Heber took a 12-9 lead late in the first quarter on consecutive jump shots from forward Makenzie Martin, but Riverview guard Erykah Johns responded with a short jumper from left side before Heber guard Skylar Johnson drilled a three-pointer from right wing.
    Leading 15-11 entering the second quarter, Martin added to the Lady Panthers' lead with a jumper from right wing but the Lady Raiders closed the gap with five straight, including an old-fashioned three-point play by Johns, who snared a rebound and scored while drawing contact.
    Heber bounced back with a 7-0 spurt sparked by Martin, who drained a 19-foot jumper from left wing. Skylar Johnson then picked a steal, which led to a pair of free throws by Hannah Johnson, who moments later ripped a three-pointer from left corner, boosting the Lady Panthers' lead to 24-16 with 2:00 left in the first half.
    The Lady Raiders came storming back, using an 11-0 run to take the lead as Johns canned two free throws, forward Meg Meachum buried a three-pointer from left wing, guard Kayla Young converted an old-fashioned three-point play, guard Madison Riley hit a free throw and guard Alexis Baker came away with a steal that led to a layup by Johns.
    Riverview continued its hot streak early in the third quarter as Meachum popped a three-pointer from left wing on the Lady Raiders' opening possession then Riley scored in transition and Johns hit a driving bank shot.
    Suddenly down 34-24, Heber forward Mary Simmons sank a jumper inside the foul line and Hannah Johnson hit a runner in the lane, but Young sliced down right baseline for a layup.
    Following a pair of free throws from Hannah Johnson, Johns scored inside before Skylar Johnson canned a midrange jumper from right wing. Riley countered with a three-pointer from left corner, giving Riverview a 41-32 lead, but the Lady Panthers countered with five straight as Martin scored in transition and Hannah Johnson nailed a three-pointer out front.
    Riley gave the Lady Raiders a 6-point cushion with a pull up jumper from right baseline, but Heber refused to go down quietly as Martin sank a midrange jumper from right wing and Hannah Johnson drilled a three-pointer from left wing, pulling Heber within a point and causing Riverview to call for timeout with 1:36 left in the third quarter.
    After the break in action, Johns followed her own miss for two, extending the Lady Raiders' lead to 45-42 entering the fourth quarter.
    Riverview opened the fourth with four straight, including a basket off an inbound play by post player Aryana Watson. Martin hit a free throw and forward Mary Lawrence scored off an inbound play as the Lady Panthers hung around, but Meachum ripped a three-pointer from right wing, pushing the Lady Raiders' lead to 51-45.
    Page 2 of 2 - Heber closed within two on consecutive baskets from Lawrence and Martin but Watson scored from right block before Skylar Johnson turned a steal into a pair of free throws.
    Leading by a bucket late in the fourth quarter, Riverview closed the game out with a 7-0 run, starting when Young found Johns, who finished inside while drawing a foul. Young then sliced through the teeth of the Lady Panthers' defense for a layup and Johns added a bucket in transition off an assist from Young, setting the final at 60-51.
    Johns scored a game-high 22 points for Riverview (6-0), Meachum followed with 12, Riley added nine and Young finished with eight.
    Martin paced the Lady Panthers (4-3) with 17 points, Hannah Johnson followed with 15 and Skylar Johnson chipped in nine.
