  • West Side recorded the game’s first two baskets, taking an early 5-0 lead on Wednesday in the opening round of the 1A, Region 3 Tournament.
But it was all Nemo Vista thereafter as the top-seeded Lady Red Hawks limited West Side to only five field goals over the final 29 minutes while gliding to a 48-20 victory.
Nemo Vista led 17-5 after the first quarter, 29-12 at half and 42-15 through three quarters of play. The Lady Red Hawks placed the mercy-rule into effect early in the fourth quarter on consecutive baskets by forwards Maggie Mahan and Sade Harrison.
The Lady Eagles got off to a quick start as guard Alexis Barnes slashed into the lane and finished in traffic and point guard Abby Turney buried a three-pointer from top of the key.
Nemo Vista responded by closing the first quarter with a 17-0 run, including 12 points from Mahan, who scored in a variety of ways, using her versatility to torch the Lady Eagles inside and from the perimeter.
Barnes scored five in a row for West Side, trimming Nemo Vista’s lead to nine early in the second quarter, but the Lady Red Hawks closed the first half with a 10-2 surge.
Mahan turned a steal into a layup and Nemo Vista guard Jacie Andrews followed with back to back three-pointers as Nemo Vista pushed its lead to 37-12 midway through the third quarter and cruised to victory.
Mahan scored a game-high 20 points for Nemo Vista (26-6), Andrews followed with 11, Harrison chipped in seven and guard Chase Paladino had five.
Barnes paced West Side with 11 points and Turney added three, while forward Ashley Gentry, guard Sydnee Phillips and guard Kayla Johnson each contributed a bucket.
