  • South Side Bee Branch bumped West Side out of a tie for first place with a 10-4 triumph over the Lady Eagles on Wednesday in 1A-2 South Conference action in Greers Ferry.

  • South Side Bee Branch bumped West Side out of a tie for first place with a 10-4 triumph over the Lady Eagles on Wednesday in 1A-2 South Conference action in Greers Ferry.
    The Lady Hornets, who improved to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play, scored four runs in the top half of the first frame.
    Baylee Clark walked and came around to score the first run then Kendall Sullivan singled and scored on Rachel Lawrence’s RBI double. With two outs, Ashley Smith drove home Lawrence with an RBI single and Makenzie Mosley added an RBI triple, which plated Smith.
    South Side added an insurance run in the second when Brianna Dumas reached on an error and scored on Bethany Wilson’s RBI groundout.
    In the top of the fourth, the Lady Hornets scored three more runs as Wilson and Clark both singled and scored on Sullivan’s 2 RBI triple. Lawrence drove home Sullivan, extending South Side’s lead to 8-0 entering the bottom of the fourth.
    Facing pitcher Breanna Wells, West Side scratched across its first run in the bottom of the fourth when Karlye Cothren walked, moved to third on a single by Brianna Smith and scored on Carra Duncan’s RBI single.
    South Side snatched its run back in the top half of the fifth as Sullivan walked and scored on Wilson’s RBI sacrifice-fly, which she lifted to center field.
    Trailing 9-1, the Lady Eagles battled back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, starting with a double off the bat of Sydney Phillips. Ashley Gentry drove home Phillips with an RBI triple and Gentry scored moments later on an RBI single by Alexis Barnes.
    Wells pitched out of further trouble and Gentry, West Side’s pitcher, held the Lady Hornets scoreless in the final two frames.
    With South Side leading 10-3, West Side battled to the end, stirring up a threat in the bottom of the seventh when Gentry ripped a single up the middle. Barnes followed with a single to center then Gentry hustled around to score from second on a ground ball off the bat of Cothren.
    The Lady Eagles fell to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in league play.
