  • Bigelow scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth and final inning to pull away from Quitman 6-0 on Tuesday in the first game of a 4-2A East Conference doubleheader at the Quitman Sports Complex.
Bigelow won the second game of the twin bill, 5-2.
Pitcher Sara Squires struck out eight and only allowed four hits without walking a batter to complete her shutout in the first game.
The visiting Lady Panthers, who improved to 7-7 overall and 7-2 in conference play, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Taylor Pelham beat out a bunt single, stole second and scored on Hope Ison’s two-out RBI single to center field.
With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Quitman pitcher Michaela Ball escaped the top half when second base player Larra Goff took away a potential base hit with a smooth play on a grounder up the middle.
Squires pitched around Maggie Webb’s one-out bunt single in the bottom of the first and the Lady Bulldogs went down in order in the second before nearly stirring up a rally in the bottom half of the third.
With two outs in the third, Katelyn Houston drilled a single to center field and Maggie Webb followed with a bunt single, but Squires used her blazing fastball to record an inning-ending strikeout.
Ball retired Bigelow in order in the fourth, including two strikeouts, but Quitman squandered Roseanna Ezell’s one-out single in the bottom half.
In the top of the fifth, the Lady Panthers scored five runs on three hits, starting when Pelham slapped a one-out single through the hole on left side. After Jasey Reed walked, Squires reached on an error that allowed Pelham to score.
Ison drove home Squires while reaching on an error then Briana Gangoso’s RBI single plated courtesy runner Olivia Buie, pushing Bigelow’s lead to 4-0.
Rappold followed with an RBI double belted down the left field line, scoring Ison and Gangoso as the Lady Panthers took a 6-0 lead and cruised in the bottom half behind Squires, who struck out two more while retiring the Lady Bulldogs in order.
