  • Sacred Heart pitcher Joe Beck tossed a one-hitter while striking out seven in five innings of work as the Rebels run-ruled Concord 11-1 on Friday in the first round of the 1A Region 3 Tournament.
1A-5 North top-seeded Sacred Heart jumped all over the Pirates in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs on four hits as Alex Fresneda, Beck, Hunter Andrews and Quentin Bowling each singled and scored, while Nick Hoelzman walked and scored. Bowling drove home two runs with a single to left field.
Concord, which wrapped up its season with a record of 6-8, worked six walks against Beck, including three in the second but came up empty.
The Pirates pulled within four at 5-1 in the third inning after Jacob Webb walked and scored on Trey Adams’ two-out ground ball turned throwing error. But Beck fired back with a strikeout to end the threat.
Sacred Heart erupted with six runs despite only two hits in the bottom of the fourth to put the game away. Fresneda and Bowling were hit by a pitch and scored, Beck reached on an error and scored, Hunter Andrews singled and scored, Cade Chapman reached on a fielder’s choice and scored and Philip Gottsponer walked and scored.
With Sacred Heart leading 8-1, Stephen Maus delivered the big blow with a three-run double crushed to deep left center.
Third baseman Ethan Hebert produced Concord’s lone hit ¬ a single through the hole on right side. Webb and Eli Osborn walked twice for the Pirates, while Riley Brock, Eli Colton Billington also walked and Jacob Roark was hit by a pitch.
The Rebels advanced to the regional semifinals, where they lost to West Side 7-2 on Saturday.
