  • Post 64’s incredible run through the Junior Zone 3 American Legion Tournament came to a grinding halt on Wednesday as the Panthers ran out of gas against top-seeded Cabot Centennial Bank.
Two days after the sixth-seeded Panthers beat the same Cabot team 13-3, Post 64 fell flat in the championship round as Centennial Bank rolled to a pair of run-rule victories, topping Heber Springs 15-0 and 13-0 to advance to this weekend’s state tournament in North Little Rock.
Cabot right-handed pitcher Chris Odom picked up the win in both games, cruising through a combined 10 innings while striking out seven and only allowing six hits and seven base runners.
Centennial Bank (22-7) scored 15 runs on 11 hits in the first game, forcing a winner take all championship game in which they pounded out eight hits in only four at-bats.
Pierce Mitchum , Jacob Blasingame, Chase Vines, and Shayne Kimble each had a single in the Panthers’ 15-0 loss. Blasingame, Conner Lindsey and Andrew Bradshaw produced the only hits, all singles, for Post 64 in the second game.
The Panthers had two starters out with injury entering the championship round, but it wouldn’t matter. Cabot was relentless.
“We had a good tournament but there is nothing I am taking away from that Cabot team right there,” said Panther Coach B.J. Greene. “They scored 28 runs in two games and hit the ball all over the park. You can’t take anything away from them. Our guys played as hard as they could.
“Cabot played really well. I am proud of our guys. They came into the tournament as the sixth seed and made the championship game versus the one seed and they had to beat us twice. It bodes well for our program, it really does,” added Greene.
