  • Michelle Mobley of Heber Springs has been chosen as The Sun-Times Person of the Month for July.  She is now in the running for The Sun-Times Person of the Year, which will be announced in January 2015.

Mobley was nominated by Dr. Brenda Gulledge with the following submission:

“Whether designing planters for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Greers Ferry Dam Dedication, coaching 4-H youth for various competitions, planning programs for the University of Arkansas-Division of Agriculture, or advising farmers on crop productivity, our Person of the Month is competent and versatile in her numerous roles. As County Extension Agent (Agriculture) and Staff Chair for the Cleburne County Cooperative Extension Service, Ms. Michelle Mobley, is a dynamo of energy and creativity.  Her enthusiasm for her work, her smile, and her positive attitude are contagious.  She leads the Master Gardener Program in beautifying public areas, works with 4-H Leaders in providing quality educational experiences for the youth of Cleburne County, helps with the Community Garden, and directs the activities and business of the Extension Office.  Each year, she takes 4-H members to the State and National Grasslands Evaluation Competitions where the junior 4-H members have earned first place in the State every year.  She assists local cattle producers in scheduling brucellosis vaccinations for their heifers and actually helps with the vaccinations!

Michelle, a native of Batesville, AR, received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arkansas with a major in Environmental Soil and Water Sciences and minor in Agronomy, plus a Master of Science degree in Agriculture.  She moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, serving as Urban Horticulture Agent there for six (6) years.  While there, she worked with community gardens, school gardens, greenhouses, and was a volunteer for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program, Jesus Way Homeless Shelter, and a mascot (aka Big Alice) for the University of Alabama Gymnastics.

In 2008 she became Agriculture Agent for Cleburne County where she currently serves in an ex officio capacity on the Boards for Cleburne County Cattlemen’s Association and Cleburne County Farm Bureau.  She also serves as a Committee Chairperson for the Farm Bureau Women’s Association, the Cleburne County Fair Board, and Sugarloaf Heritage Council Board.

Michelle and her husband Luke, who is involved with Livestock Consulting and Auctions, live in Heber Springs with their blue heeler Dixie and blue heeler/border collie Hank.  Her interest in agriculture came from the family farm, and helping Luke and his family with their cattle farm when they began dating in high school.  Other interests are running, hiking, the outdoors, and genealogy, where she is researching her Native American heritage.
