"Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain." And God granted his request.” I Chronicles 4:9-10
In verse 10 the Bible says, “And God granted him what he requested.” Why? Because Jabez had a heart for God … he prayed:
Here is my paraphrased understanding of this prayer.
“O God, my heavenly Father,
I call on you today to bless me!!!
In Jesus name, I am asking for your blessing today!!!
Give me a holy influence with my family and friends.
Bless and increase the things you have entrusted to me.
Keep your strong hand upon me to guide me
and to strengthen me and to protect me.
Keep me from any harm or evil that would come my way
so that my life will be free from its destruction.
In Jesus name I pray. Amen”
Jabez prayed for God’s Blessing. In Hebrew writings this word “indeed” was used to place an enormous amount of importance on what is being said.
The Hebrew word “BLESS” literally means “to invoke divine favor upon; to bring the benefits of God upon.” Jabez was asking God to provide him with TRUE happiness.
We often think our prayers are answered only if they are received in the manner and time that we asked. Notice here Jabez did not ask for anything in the material. He asked for God’s blessing. Jabez realized that this is where true happiness is found. Someone once said that there is a God shaped vacuum in every human soul and only God Himself can fill it.
Jabez prayer for God’s blessing is so simple it’s profound. Notice, Jabez is asking for God to extend his influence. He wanted to be someone that would influence others for God and Godly things. To make him a significant person, to give him opportunities to influence others for God.
Jabez knew that what he was asking was bigger than himself.
He needed God’s hand upon his life. The “hand of the Lord” is a Biblical term for God’s power and presence in our lives. Might our prayer be that we are where God’s hand can be upon us. Od is not here to hurt us but to help us. He desires to lead and guide us.
We notice another thing in Jabez prayer. He ask God to protect him from the evil in his day. We, too, must be on guard not only from the evil of our enemy, the Devil or the temptation from the things of this world but from our self (self destruction). We need God to help us make wise choices in life.
Not a day must go by but what we don’t pray for protection from everything that would pull us from the hand of God.
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is strange with its twists and turns
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won if he'd stuck it out.
Don't give up, though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than it seems
to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are -
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit.
