West Side graduates Jacob Miller and Blaine Hipp finished in the Top 3 of the AWS weld trials welding competition, advancing past 60 others from across the United States. For Miller, it is the second time he has advanced to Round 3 in the AWS weld trials.
The two have been working for two months in AWS pre-trials competition with welding instructor Randy Carr, who teaches at both WSHS and Arkansas State University at Heber Springs and Aaron Carr welding instructor at Arkansas State University at Heber Springs. Working in the classroom and the metal shop, Randy Carr has produced several high school individual and team champions at the state level. Two others, Dylan Thomas and his nephew Aaron Carr, are among the very few in Arkansas perhaps the only ones- to compete in welding pre-trails.
Hipp and Miller will go to Huntsville Alabama in January for a week long tune up with the US welding expert along with some of the past Worldskills metal winners. They will compete in the final round in February in Huntsville Alabama to see who will represent the US in Worldskills in October 2017 in Abu Dhabi.
