The City of Quitman Library, Safe Room, and EMS were opened a few years ago.  The new attractive building was constructed on land donated by Lance, Summer & Roe Reynolds.  At that time the grounds around the Library were sodded.

Last summer the opportunity for a Grant to landscape the Library was announced.  Mayor Cyndi Kerr applied for The “Greening of Arkansas” Grant Program that was sponsored by the Arkansas Flower and Garden Show with the goal of encouraging organizations and civic groups to beautify their communities and enhance their quality of life through horticulture. Grant awards were available up to $2,500.00.

Mayor Cyndi Kerr and Quitman’s Volunteer Group, Quitman Connection, contacted Master Gardeners, Ron and Carla Tunnell, to assist with design, research on plant material and costs.  The plan involved excavation, purchase of good soil, plants, mulch, edging and watering solutions.  Mayor Kerr was notified in November 2016 that Quitman Connection was awarded a Grant of $1,950.00.

Work was completed June 21, 2017.  To enhance the new landscaping two outdoor benches were donated to the Library by Varvil Realty.  Work was provided by volunteers Ron and Carla Tunnell, Virgil Bagwell, Mayor Kerr, and city employees:  Tommy, Spanky and Preston.  Jay Cupit helped with workers as well.
