The Fireworks Extravaganza was held Tuesday, July 3, at Sandy Beach. There were vendors, music by KFFB 106.1, volleyball games, the Arkansas National Guard 106th Army Band (part of it) from the 871st Troop Command, aka Funkle Sam, to entertain and of course, sand and the lake.
Funkle Sam consisted of Specialist Les Sellers on bass, Sgt. Brooks Gatlin also on bass, Staff Sergeant Kris Perkins on guitar and vocals, Specialist Richard Vorwerk on lead vocals, Staff Sergeant Kaede Wilson also on Lead vocals, Sgt. first class Mark Wallace on drums, Specialist Lisa Butler on keyboard and vocals, Sgt. Zach Foster on keyboards, horns and vocals, Specialist Justin Holt on horns and keyboards and Specialist Richard King, sound technician.
Funkle Sam began playing around 8:00 p.m. and played until the Fireworks began.
The events kicked off at 10:00 a.m. and ran until approximately 10:00 p.m. for a fun filled day.
The fireworks display caused three fires for the Fire Department to tend to and put out.
“We were pretty prepared,” said Captain Doug Perry. “We knew we might have them so we had two firefighters on the boat, two brush trucks, five firefighters on the beach with a brush truck and a gator. There were no surprises.”
Perry said the worked on the third fire from 11:50 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. and then had to go back with the fireboat from 2:45 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
The dry conditions contributed to the issues but the Fire Department was ready.
