The 56th annual Heber Springs Chamber banquet held January 16 filled the Community Center basketball court floor with real heroes. The theme for the banquet: Real Heroes Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage.
In attendance besides the guest speaker Scott Schrimpe, a retired New York Fireman, who told a compelling story of courage during the World Trade Center attacks, were local heroes. People who work as policemen, fireman and other emergency personnel putting their lives at risk every day so others could be safe were honored.
Rebecca Lynn and David A. Couch from Main Street Heber Springs LLC bought tables for the local heroes. Also in attendance were elected officials, Lieutenant Governor Mark Darr, State Land Commissioner John Thurston, US Representatives Rick Crawford and Jay Sherrod, State Representative Josh Johnston, Cleburne County Sheriff Marty Moss and Heber Springs Mayor Jackie McPherson.
Chamber President Jeff Lynch opened the evening by welcoming all the business and community leaders.
In chamber business outgoing board members Gary Redd, Paul Muse and Bryan Tilley received plaques of gratitude. Other outgoing members not in attendance included Tim Martin, James Nelson and Pam Zuber.Chamber officers for 2012 are President Jeff Lynch, President-elect Dr. Joe Sugg, Secretary Will Humphreys and Treasurer Glenda Magee.
The Board of Directors includes Michael Cooper, Jim Adams, Will Humphreys, Jayson Jones, Jeff Lynch, Glenda Magee, Dr. Joe Sugg, Traci Tutor, Louis Short, Debbie Thompson, Kelly Hill and Justin Johnston.
Directors at Large are past President Carol Johnson, Mayor Jackie McPherson and Judge Brenda Hunt. Chamber staff members are Executive Director Melisa Gardner, Office Manager Arlene Anderson and Events Coordinator Theresa Bobo.
The chamber had 10 items donated for auction. Auctioneer Frank Orr from Century 21 did the honors to sell the items to the highest bidder.
When the dinner was over it was time for the guest speaker Scott Schrimpe. He lives in Orange County, New York. He is part of the New York Fire Department Disaster Assistance Response Team affiliated with the American Red Cross. Schrimpe was in Arkansas during the floods in May 2011. He began his service career as a volunteer fireman in Smithtown, New York in 1981. In 1992 he was appointed to Ladder 127 in Jamaica, Queens. In 1997 he transferred to Squad 41, a special operations unit in the South Bronx, 12 miles from the World Trade Center. After his night shift was over on the morning of September 11, 2001, he left the station…
