Some see change as a challenge. Brittany Vining decided to view change as an opportunity.

Vining, a senior music education major at Arkansas Tech University, will present her senior clarinet recital at Witherspoon Auditorium on Sunday, Nov. 20. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission will be free and open to the public.

The recital will mark the culmination of a busy semester for the Heber Springs native.

Vining served as drum major for the Arkansas Tech Marching Band this fall. She helped lead the “Band of Distinction” during its first marching season under the direction of Christopher M. Anderson, who was selected to succeed Hal Cooper as Arkansas Tech director of bands in June.

Cooper served in that role from 1979-2011. Anderson is only the fourth director of bands in the 102-year history of Arkansas Tech, following in a tradition founded by Marvin Williamson (1913-50) and nurtured by Gene Witherspoon (1950-79) and Cooper.

“I never thought I’d be a drum major,” said Vining, who did not have any previous experience in that capacity. “We knew last spring when Mr. Cooper announced his retirement that there would be a transition coming up, and there were two drum major spots open. I saw it as a big chance to step up and be a leader during that transition.”

A clarinetist since fifth grade, Vining is a 2008 graduate of Heber Springs High School. She hopes to return to the school environment as a music teacher upon her graduation from Arkansas Tech.
