Most students in Cleburne County headed back to classes Tuesday after being out of school for snow days. Many students are concerned about the possibility of Saturday school, a shorter spring break, or a longer school year.
So far, Quitman students are the only ones to have to go to school on Saturday. West Side and Heber Springs will have to look at their options, but Saturday school is not in the talks, yet.
West Side Superintendent Steve Lucas said they had five snow days built into the school calendar. “We have now used all five of those days. We do have some days we can take if we have to. There is President’s Day or a professional development day. We want to leave spring break alone and not go too far into June.”
Heber Springs Superintendent Russell Hester said President’s Day and Good Friday are two possible days to cut down the used snow days without getting into spring break or going too long into June. “If we use President’s Day and Good Friday, we still have another two days to make up. Saturday school experiences are that about 50-percent of students miss those. When that happens teachers are hesitant to get into anything too detailed because of those that are absent.”
Hester planned to meet with the principals Wednesday afternoon to look at their options.
Since Concord was closed Friday, Monday, and Tuesday due to the weather, a representative could not be reached for comment.
John Lewis with the National Weather Service in Little Rock said there are no official snow and ice numbers from last week’s storm in Cleburne County, but based on reports, they are estimating around six-inches of snow and a thin glaze of ice, possibly a tenth of an inch, fell in our area.
