It’s time once again for the Urban Bow Hunt in Heber Springs. Yesterday was the beginning of the 09-10 deer season and marks the fourth year for the hunt in Heber Springs.
There are plenty of opportunities to harvest a doe this season. “We have 300 doe or ‘deer camp’ tags to hand out,” said Jackie McPherson, Heber Springs mayor. “Hunters wanting to participate will need to pick up a tag at city hall. They will have to register before getting a tag.”
This year the city is doling out tags one at a time. “Once someone harvests a deer, they can come back for another tag. They can come back as many times as needed, but only one tag will be distributed per person per visit. We’re hoping this will help increase the harvest number.”
There are rules hunters must abide by, including that the tags being distributed are for harvesting doe only. The tag distributed by the city can only be used to harvest deer in the city limits. “The first deer must be a doe, they can still harvest a buck, but they will have to use their regular buck tag for the season.”

Another rule is that the first deer harvested must be donated to Lonnie’s Meat Market in Heber Springs where the meat will be donated to an organization to distribute it in Cleburne County. Your deer must be skinned, cleaned, and in an ice chest when delivered to Lonnie’s.
For additional rules for this season, look to the Oct. 2 print edition of the Sun-Times.
