On January 17, twenty-two people were arrested in Arkansas in what was billed as “Operation Meilke Way”. The charges came as a result of an indictment for offenses ranging from federal drug offenses to witness tampering. According to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the “investigation targeted a large scale drug trafficking organization distributing multi-pound quantities of methamphetamine in central, north, and northeast Arkansas.” The operation resulted in the seizure of 13.3 pounds of meth, 7 vehicles, $163,590, and 5 guns.
The operation included federal agents, state police, and various local and regional authorities in the region. According to the DOJ, the methamphetamine was smuggled from Mexico to north and central Arkansas for distribution.
A grand jury indicted Michael Meilke, 38, of Bradford on August 2, 2011 on 8 counts of Conspiracy With Intent to Distribute (PWID). One of the indictments was for 500g or more of methamphetamine mixture. This original indictment led to the issue of federal warrants and subsequent arrests of the other individuals targeted in the operation ranging from Batesville to Benton.
