Warhawks overcome Bulldogs’ three-point barrage

Mount Vernon-Enola survived a late thee-point barrage from Quitman on Thursday night while claiming an 86-70 victory in Quitman.
Behind 60-42 entering the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs nailed nine three-pointers to close within six late in the game but MVE reinserted its starters to put the game away.
The Warhawks outscored Quitman 23-16 in the first quarter as power forward Blake Keathley controlled the paint with 10 points and forward Adam Caudill added seven. MVE guard Clayton Beene, who made a half-court shot at halftime of the senior girl’s game for a grand prize of $1,000, ripped a three-pointer from left wing late in the first quarter but Quitman forward Chase Freeman answered with a deep trey from left wing.
Quitman swingman Hunter Bridges helped keep the Bulldogs within striking distance by making three from beyond the arc in the first quarter while scoring 11 points in the first eight minutes alone.
MVE outscored the Bulldogs 19-12 in the second quarter, including an 8-2 run to begin the period. Quitman pulled within seven on a three-pointer from top of the key by Bridges but Beene responded with a trey and Keathley made two free throws, giving the Warhawks a 36-25 lead.
Beene added a deep three-pointer from left wing late in the first half and MVE guard Josh West notched a stick back off a missed free throw, giving the Warhawks a 42-28 cushion at halftime.
MVE outscored Quitman 18-14 in the third quarter behind seven points from Caudill and West but power forward Sawyer Johnson kept the Bulldogs’ hopes alive with six points in the third quarter, while guard Sheldon Minor, forward Hunter Martin, guard Dakota Bohannan and guard Cutler Stewart each tallied a basket.
In the fourth quarter, Quitman drilled a combined nine three-pointers, including three from Bridges and two each from Cutler Stewart and Bohannan. Minor and point guard Chase Stewart also connected from beyond the arc in the final stanza as the Bulldogs refused to go down quietly.
With just over 1:30 remaining, Quitman trimmed its deficit to 76-70 when Bohannan sank a trey from top of the key but MVE reinserted all of its starters and found immediate success as West passed long to guard Seth Brady streaking ahead of the pack for a layup off an inbound play.
Caudill added a pair of free throws, West drove into traffic and finished with a left-handed scoop and Brady added two more baskets to set the final at 86-70.
West led MVE with 24 points – all but five in the second half, while Keathley and Caudill each scored 16, Brady finished with 14 and Beene tallied 11.
Bridges paced Quitman with 23 points, including seven three-pointers. Martin followed with 10, while Cutler Stewart and Bohannan each had eight.
